SURGICAL PROCEDURES: Liposcution

Life Sculpt Information

Liposuction is a time-tested and well-known means to sculpting areas of stubborn body fat.

Traditional liposuction (the kind you may have seen on reality television) is certainly not a delicate procedure, requiring 4-8 weeks of uncomfortable recovery time. Before the first fat cell could be suctioned, patients would need to be put under anesthesia. Then a large metal tube would be inserted under the skin through surgical incisions. The surgeon would vigorously “attack” the fat, breaking down the tissue with his own mechanical force. As a result, patients would experience black and blue bruising, swelling and soreness that often required narcotic medications to alleviate. Because of the anesthesia, patients would awake from the procedure feeling groggy and sleepy and be unable to leave the surgeon’s office by themselves. Patients were required to wear an uncomfortable surgical compression garment for at least 3 weeks after the procedure and usually took close to a week off from work to recover and return to the surgeon’s office for suture removal.

Fortunately, there is an alternative to traditional liposuction that may better suit the lifestyle of today’s busy, discriminating patient. SlimLipo, or laser-assisted lipolysis, is a new technology that has revolutionized the liposuction industry by minimizing recovery time, potential complications and may provide the much welcome benefit of skin tightening as well. In the SlimLipo procedure, the surgeon will first insert a laser fiber through the skin via several puncture wounds about the size of a pencil.  The heat from the laser fiber quickly melts the fat, breaking the fat cells without the physical trauma one would see in traditional liposuction. The laser also heats up the surrounding skin, tightening and toning it from the inside. After lasering the desired areas, the surgeon inserts a small suction tube through the same puncture wounds to easily extract the liquefied fat. Blood loss, bruising, swelling and pain are minimal. Best of all, this entire procedure is done under local anesthesia, much like having a filling put in at the dentist. Patients simply get up off the operating table and walk out of the unaccompanied if they chose! A surgical garment is worn for only 3days (as opposed to 3 weeks in traditional liposuction), but patients will be able to return to work the next day. Usually there are no sutures to remove and any minor discomfort is usually taken care of with just a Paracetamole or two. Results are often immediately noticeable, but the treated sites will continue improve in both tone and skin quality over the following 6-12weeks.
Slim Lipo came on the market last year and was the result of 6 years of research. Slim Lipo uses 925 nanometers and 975 nanometers wavelenghts that were developed after research showed that these wavelengths were very specifically absorbed by fatty tissue. 925 actually "melts" the fat and results in liquefying the fatty tissue with much less energy than SmartLipo. 975 nm is more specifically absorbed by collagen fibers and results in more specific tightening without using excessive heat. Slim lipo uses a flexible wand made out of silicone fibers and can turn corners. The laser wand delivers energy to a much wider area and therefore "melts" many more cells with each pass, and requires less energy to do the job. Slim Lipo patients have much less bruising, swelling and discomfort that patients who have had traditional liposuction.
Sophisticated clients are becoming more educated on the benefits of advanced, minimally invasive procedures like laser liposuction1.  Men and women want to look better and be more sculpted, without the sizable tell-tale bruises that scream "I've had work done!"  The SlimLipo™ body sculpting laser puts the power of well-tolerated procedures in your hands.
Palomar has enhanced traditional liposuction with SlimLipo, our body contouring laser that uses optimal wavelengths to selectively "melt" fat as well as tighten tissue through soft tissue coagulation.  More importantly, clients typically experience a more rapid recovery and results that will have their friends lining up at your doorstep.
SlimLipo offers a laser-based enhancement to traditional liposuction that's easier on you and your clients. Your clients will benefit from smaller incisions, less bruising and less blood loss, all resulting in easier treatments and rapid recovery.  And you'll both appreciate the smoother, tighter skin that can be achieved with SlimLipo laser-assisted lipolysis.

SLIMLIPO™ The word SLIM™ stands for Selective Laser Induced Melting and what is new is the laser wavelength-920 and 920/980 nm- which selectively melt fat.
New laser liposuction technology is revolutionizing the way liposuction is done. Benefits of the new laser liposuction technique are

  1. The laser selectively dissolves fat unlike standard liposuction which can destroy all tissues.
  2. The laser closes blood vessels less bleeding, less bruising
  3. The laser tightens skin less loose skin after liposuction
  4. Laser liposuction is less traumatic quicker recovery
  5. The laser fiber is tiny  smaller scars
  6. Smaller areas done under local anesthesia

All laser liposuction machines are not equal. You need to understand the importance of the laser wavelength used to melt fat. Most laser liposuction machines on the market today use a 1064nm or 1320nm laser wavelength. Actually the best wavelength which is most highly absorbed by fat is 920nm, a wavelength patented and owned by Palomar™ Medical in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Palomar has introduced the SLIMLIPO™ Aspire™ Liposuction Unit which is the first 920nm based laser liposuction and is 3 times as selectively absorbed by fat as the 1064nm lasers and 2 times more than the 1320nm-the other commercially available laser liposuction technology. It is also 5 times as selectively absorbed by blood. This means that the SLIMLIPO™ Aspire™ laser liposuction unit dissolves fat and prevents bleeding much more effectively than any other laser liposuction machine available. See the figure below for comparison of the fat melting selectivity of the various laser liposuction units available today-remember, Palomar’s new SLIMLIPO uses the 920nm laser
For you the patient this translates into:
· Gentler more thorough fat removal
· Less bleeding, less bruising
· Quicker recovery
We also can blend in a 980nm laser wavelength with the Aspire™ which is highly absorbed by the Dermis-the deep layer of your skin which controls skin tightening. For you this translates into:
· Tighter skin after liposuction
· Less risk of revisional surgery after liposuction
